Our group has extensive expertise in the area of Fiber Bragg Gratings and optical fiber sensing. Recently we have been investigating the use of Fiber Bragg Grating sensors in extreme environments such inn gas turbines, engines and oil wells.
The first thing to consider when investigating the performance of devices in theses conditions is whether the device itself is capable of surviving the harsh temperatures that will be encountered. It is very typical for the temperature to exceed 700 deg C in turbines and combustion chambers.
To determine their performance at theses elevated temperatures we have been studying the performance of silica fiber.
